Choices

Loomis knows that those who are in the market for cabinets are faced with many options. Besides choosing the cabinet style, and the type of wood and stain, there is also the decision of whether to purchase modular or custom cabinetry. More recently, cabinet re-facing has come onto the scene as a popular alternative to replacing cabinets.

While cabinet re-facing may seem to be an appealing and affordable alternative, an important distinction must be made. When re-facing cabinets, the changes are all cosmetic, not structural. Loose joints, broken wood, rickety drawers that don’t fully extend, and wasted space or space that could be better utilized will remain. Adding a big bank of drawers where a cabinet once was (or vice versa) is not an option. Additionally, the layout of the cabinets will not change so all appliances must remain where they are. And while the cabinets may look decent from the outside, when the new cabinet doors are opened, the old interior of the cabinets will still be there. Many consumers would also be surprised to learn that, in most cases, replacing cabinets is actually LESS expensive than re-facing!

When choosing new cabinets, whether for a new home or a remodel, the option becomes whether to buy modular (factory built) or custom built cabinets. While there are some advantages to custom cabinets, they often come at a very steep price. Fortunately for today’s consumer, many of the features that were once exclusive to custom cabinets are now available with modular units as well. These options include: finished interiors, glass cabinet doors, full-extension drawers, lazy susan’s, decorative moldings, corbals and onlays, wooden range hoods, and refrigerator panels, just to name a few. With options like these, more and more people are finding that it is quite possible to achieve a custom kitchen with modular cabinetry at a lower price.
